Art in Unusual Places is a scheme that makes empty shop units and city-centre spaces in Leeds available for use by artists. Spaces range in size, scale and location and include fully accessible units, shop windows and hoardings. The programme began in December with window exhibitions in units in Leeds Shopping Plaza, on Lands Lane and 42 New Briggate.
Art in Unusual Spaces has a number of spaces in the city centre available for artistic activity. To see images of potential empty shop units please look at the Art in Unusual Spaces Flickr account.
If you have an idea for an exhibition, piece of work or project that would be suitable for the spaces available then we want to hear from you. We particularly welcome proposals for projects that respond to the context of the scheme and the spaces in some form. The scheme is currently unable to pay exhibition costs or fees but all spaces are rent and rate free to artists.
If you would like to take part in the programme register your interest – get in touch!
Art in Unusual Places is a partnership project between Independant Artists and Curators, Leeds City Council, the business community and cultural sector.
Currently Yvonne Carmichael is working voluntarily on the scheme. As there is so much to do in so little time, Yvonne cannot inform unsuccessful applicants or provide feedback. Your proposal will however by kept on file incase a suitable space becomes available.

Is there any availible information on possible locations of the shop units? In order for our proposals to be more contextualised.
If you just look in the What’s On Section of the website it details all the current exhibtions in the spaces that we are working with at the moment. (location of them can be seen on the map)
Hello Ben,
Wall drawings with electrical tape sounds good, do take the time to submit a proposal and have a look at some of the spaces!
Hello Richie,
It would be good to propose a photography exhibition for Art in Unusual Spaces. As it says in the call for proposals we especially favour work which responds to the spaces or scheme in some way so it might be nice to propose a site-specific photography project / residency / exhibition?
Visitors to art in unusual places might also like to check out the current in-store installations at Harvey Nicks. Brokered by Leeds Fashion Works, and involving students and staff from LMU, as well as the store’s own design team ‘Textiles in Yorkshire’ has involved the prestigious store working directly with local producers of the raw material – 13 mills from across the region. The installations spread throughout the trading areas of the store, and involve not only regionally-produced fabrics, as backround for shoe displays, for example, and throughout the changing rooms, but also more unusual by-products of the industry, such as ‘waste’ swags of hole-punched cloth used as the dampers in pianos, and a fascinating glimpse into the Sunny Bank Mills Textile Archive, presented in vitrines by Susan Gaunt

We are looking to put together a short term temporary exhibit to highlight the breadth of photography in the city – presented using projections or TV screens. I feel it would be easier to discuss by phone – so if you reply with a number I’ll be in touch.

Hi,
I am a promoter of new and unusual music here in Leeds as well as in London. There are certain acts I deal with that, by the nature of their music, their visual style and sometimes theatrical overtones, would benefit aesthetically by performances in unusual spaces. One perennial problem in Leeds at the moment is that not many venues actually look very nice or have much atmosphere, Those that do are booked up many months in advance, making it difficult to attract some touring artists to the area.
Would it be possible to team up with one/some of your artists to add some live music to an already existing exhibition or to collaborate for a future one?
