Residency commences on Tuesday 17th August.

Closing event with refreshments Thursday 2nd September 2010. All welcome to attend. (This will form part of the last exhibition in these ground floor spaces in Leeds Shopping Plaza before there are redeveloped.)

Ben enjoys testing and visualising how different public spaces are used, and is exploring ways to create digital tide lines for the ebb and flow of the public. Ben plans to test cameras and projections in the space focusing on anonymity and abstract visualisation. Ben will also show some non-interactive projections based on flags and borders.

Ben teaches topics from video internet fame, to social media, to physical computing at Leeds Metropolitan University. His recent work includes a collaborative project with artists and filmmakers to build GPS maps of live music performances around Leeds, and working with leading researchers across disciplines into how people use public space.”

Art in Unusual Places is a scheme that makes empty shop units and city-centre spaces in Leeds available for use by artists. Spaces range in size, scale and location and include fully accessible units, shop windows and hoardings. The programme began in December with window exhibitions in units in Leeds Shopping Plaza, on Lands Lane and 42 New Briggate.

Art in Unusual Spaces has a number of spaces in the city centre available for artistic activity. To see images of potential empty shop units please look at the Art in Unusual Spaces Flickr account.

If you have an idea for an exhibition, piece of work or project that would be suitable for the spaces available then we want to hear from you. We particularly welcome proposals for projects that respond to the context of the scheme and the spaces in some form. The scheme is currently unable to pay exhibition costs or fees but all spaces are rent and rate free to artists.

If you would like to take part in the programme register your interest – get in touch!

Art in Unusual Places is a partnership project between Independant Artists and Curators, Leeds City Council, the business community and cultural sector.

Currently Yvonne Carmichael is working voluntarily on the scheme. As there is so much to do in so little time, Yvonne cannot inform unsuccessful applicants or provide feedback. Your proposal will however by kept on file incase a suitable space becomes available.

Please send Yvonne the following info:

Name

Phone Number

Email

Website (Optional)

Images of previous work / images which are relevant to your proposal:

Your idea:

Your Experience (Have you organised exhibitions before, if so tell us a little about them):

Ground floor of Leeds Shopping Plaza.

Residency commences on Monday 16th August.

Closing event with refreshments Thursday 2nd September 2010. All welcome to attend. (This will form part of the last exhibition in these ground floor spaces in Leeds Shopping Plaza before there are redeveloped.)

Joseph will be generating a body of work exploring the visual qualities of modern broadcast television.

Using cyclic processes to evolve imagery, Joseph aims to explore his sprawling fascination with television and the televised image. Experimenting with processes and media including photography, animation, projection, collage, basic printing and drawing.

The imagery created during Joseph’s residency will hope to be hypnotic, futuristic and unusual. A body of work inspired by television at it’s most warped and humanity at it’s most vulnerable.
